The Photographer
"When every photograph in every magazine, every book, and every newspaper is glowing with color, some daring photographer will publish a black and white photograph. It will be just as outstanding as a color photograph was six years ago."
~Victor Keppler
Victor Keppler was famous for his commercial photography. He won numerous awards, including the Harvard Award in 1944, the Photographers Hall of Fame Award in 1970, and five Gold Medal Awards from the Art Directors Club throughout his career. He also founded the Famous Photographers School, a branch of the Famous Artists School.
"My mother worked in the photo lab at Famous Photographers School. She had studied photography at a school in New Haven, and pretty much she was the clerk who opened all the student work. But on her lunch hour, she got to use the state of the art dark-room with coaching from the others there. One summer I went with her just about everyday, I would get picked up by the camp bus. At the end of my camp day I"d spend it in the library there and actually met Mr. Keppler and other 'famous' photographers. I remember them as kind and curious to see a 9 year old girl pouring over the books with glee. We had all the sets as well, and the other schools' books, the magazine. . .they were lost to a move long ago. I miss them, they were a part of our family culture."
~Ann-Marie Madden Irwin
Keppler was also the author of four books, the most popular being: The Eighth Art: A Life of Color and Photography (written in 1938), and Victor Keppler: Man and Camera: A Photographic Autobiography (written in 1970).
Keppler used the latest trends in other visual arts mediums to create images that were fresh and modern. He was known as a pioneer in the world of commercial advertising. Below is a gallery of some of his photographs.
