"One of the Most Constructive Steps"
"The establishment of the Office of War Information is one of the most constructive steps which has been taken toward the coordination of agencies engaged in the war effort."
~House Appropriations Committee quoted by Time Magazine, 1943
"Its purpose was to centralize the many information services of the United States government and create a single line of communication about the war to the American public. The OWI created and distributed posters, booklets, photographs, radio shows and films designed to improve morale and boost patriotism, encourage people to participate in the war effort and, most importantly, control all information Americans received about the war."
~The National WWII Museum
The Office of War information controlled all of the WWII information that was given to the public. They censored radio broadcasts, newspapers, magazines, and photographs. They also created propaganda to improve the war effort. The OWI sent photographers all over the country to capture patriotic Americans. They came back with pictures of working children, women, African-Americans, anything to help inspire patriotic fever.
